Coulter was not a cryer. But one bad day at the clinic, after numerous proceedures, he had enough. On the
way home he began to cry. And he cried and he cried and he cried. This went on for hours. It broke my heart
to see him so sad. I went to the psychologist at the clinic who suggested giving him a blanket to create a 'safe' place
for him. He could hide under the blanket, make a tent, or make it a 'no ouchie' zone. What ever worked for him.
Coulter loved teletubbies, so the next day we went to the store and got two yards of fabric. I made one blanket for
Coulter and one for Annika. It did the trick. He loved the blanket! And, while he never slept with it at
home, it went to the hospital a lot with us and on the way home he'd throw it over his head and sleep under it. It gave
me a great since of relief to have given him some comfort.
Later that month, I saw a quilting show on TV that featured a young lady who had donated quilts to her local hospital
in honor of a special child. I thought......'hmmmm....I could do that!'.
I placed an ad in the paper asking for help, and people came!
I told the ladies my goal was to have 100 blankets in one year. Three months later at our next meeting, I had my
100 blankets!
What a blessing! Since that time 5 years ago, my wonderful volunteers have given their time and talents to create
over 3300 blankets.
Now, I am the one giving blankets in honor of my child. But, I couldn't do it with out my volunteers.
Thanks to them and their giant hearts, and tired hands!
Why Do We Do It?
We believe that a seriously ill or traumatized child can be greatly comforted by a security blanket.
We also believe that in our efforts to comfort the child, we comfort the family. We donate blankets to ANY child in
need, newborn through age eighteen.
How Can You Help?
We welcome new knitted, croched, fleece, and quilted blankets, any size, any pattern, in child
friendly colors. Please be sure all material is machine washable as your blanket will be well loved.
I Can't Sew!
Consider adopting one of our volunteers! For a donation of $10 you can sponser two quilts made
by another volunteer! You also have the oppportunity to write a personal note to the reciepient!
I Don't Have Time To Go To Meetings!
We only meet four times a year. Our meetings are a time to get together and chat and show off
our blankets. It is also a chance to pick up batting and fabric for future quilts. But! You don't have to
come! If your short on time, simply drop the blankets off at my house or mail them to me. It's important that
we support the kids...not that you attend a meeting.
Supporting My Volunteers!
I try to supply all my volunteers with fabric and batting so they don't have to invest any of their
own money. All they have to donate is their time and talent.....which we all know is priceless!
